Bhapa Ilish is a popular Bengali dish in Kolkata. It is a tasty fish preparation which is made from Hilsa fish (called Ilish in Bengali). Bhapa means steam, so this is actually steamed fish.
Ingredients:
Poppy seed (posto): 3 tablespoons
Grated coconut : 1/2 cup
Green chilli (kacha lanka): 6/7
Mustard oil (sarser tel): 2 tablespoon
Turmeric powder (Haluder guro): 2 tsp.
Sugar : 1 tsp.
Salt to taste

Preparation:
- Mix mustard seeds, poppy seeds, grated coconut, green chilies, salt and make into a paste.
- Mix this paste with mustard oil, and turmeric powder.
- Take fish slices and cover them with the above paste. Put them in a greased tiffin box, cover and cook over steam.
- Then place in a pressure cooker, which is filled with water until half of the bowl or little lower. Cook for 2-3 whistles or about 10 minutes in medium flame. Steam this until paste gives off a sharp aroma.
- Serve hot with rice .
